Car Theft

For many years, Washington State ranked among the top 10 of all states for reported car thefts.   Some may consider car theft a low-level crime, especially when compared to more violent offenses, but I understood that this crime was an epidemic that was deeply felt in our auto-dependent society and helped launch our office’s Car Theft Initiative (CTI).

Truancy Prevention

Seventy-five percent of all state prison inmates and 59% of federal inmates are high-school dropouts.  Dropouts must compete for the lowest-paying jobs, and can expect to earn $260,000 less over a lifetime of work than high-school graduates.  It is in our interest, and in the best interest of our children, to keep school in the picture for every student in King County.

Domestic Violence

One of three homicides in King County is a domestic violence crime, and an estimated 50,000 incidents of domestic violence are reported each year throughout the state.  As many as 60,000 children in King County are exposed to domestic violence in their homes.

Identity Theft

In the United States, identity (ID) theft occurs every four seconds, and Washington State ranks 14th out of the 50 states in the reported rate of identity theft.  The Federal Trade Commission reports that Washington residents reported 5,855 incidents of identity theft in 2008.  It is one of the fastest growing crimes in America.

Elder Abuse

I am committed to protecting the elderly.  In 2001, the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office created the Elder Abuse Program, dedicated to prosecuting crimes against elderly and vulnerable victims.  The Elder Abuse Project focuses on the prevention, investigation, and prosecution of physical and financial crimes against the elderly and other vulnerable adults.

Animal Cruelty

I have successfully lobbied for strong laws to prohibit and punish animal cruelty.   In 1995, a poor, helpless donkey named “Pasado” was savagely beaten to death.  Few other cases sparked more public outrage.   The outrage was widespread.   It came from all parts of the country, and the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office even received letters from around the world regarding this case.
